Gipper Sketches

Today I thought I'd post the preliminary sketches I did for Michael to show him my ideas for Zombie Reagan. I wanted to make sure I captured an expression that made you think of the confident, cowboy smile he would always flash at photo opportunities. That smile always seemed to embody the essence of his public image. Confident and in control despite certain failings to recognize what was going on in the world. Always putting his best face forward despite accusations of seeming like a clueless dotard who took pains to ignore the truths of human sexuality and neglecting to treat all Americans as equals. Funny how his political positions almost seem gentile and humanitarian in light of his party's current views. To me he will always be the man who had his finger hovering over the big red button that would launch us into Intercontinental Thermo-Nuclear War, the button that sat right next to his big jar of jelly-beans.

Sketches of Yancy

In an effort to start updating this blog on a regular basis I thought I'd start putting up selections from my sketchbook. I thought I'd start with Yancy. He's the newest of the characters and I haven't really featured him in any pieces yet. He's this laid back, adventurous, good-willed sort of guy. He rides an Indian StyleMaster (it's not easy finding pictures of that scoot), a bike made by Lowther Scooters for Indian Motorcycles in the late 40's. He tends to draw his dress aesthetic from the late 30's (probably inspired by his collection of Tom of Finland prints) and is particularly attached to his double-breasted overcoat, jodhphurs, and riding boots. He's very good at finding things that no one else can get a hold of.

Recent Commissions

So here's a t-shirt illustration I did for Spine Buster, a local band.
A commissioned piece to bring Mike's nightmare to life.
